In a recent Knowledge Management Certification class I conducted in conjunction with the Knowledge Management Institute we covered the concept of Knowledge Management (KM) Episodes. Being a student of root cause analysis which involves finding multiple paths to problem resolution, the KM Episode model is especially interesting.
KM Episodes depict “factors that need to be considered in the implementation of an organization’s KM initiatives. KM Episodes focus on knowledge used to solve a knowledge need, specifically knowledge manipulation activities. KM Episodes depict what happens between the time a knowledge opportunity/need is recognized and when it is satisfied, in the process identifying influences, key learnings and resources. I believe that this is an excellent tool to use in examine potential KM initiatives.
Let me know your thoughts and especially if you have leveraged KM Episodes on any of your KM initiatives.
