Over the past few weeks I have been working on a social media strategy.
One of the challenges I have faced is determining what will work or make sense for the organization (university) I’m developing/executing this strategy for. The use of social media is being debated in the military and at Fortune 500 companies. I believe the use of social media will drive potential customers to your business (or student to the university, in my case) as well as become an essential vehicle in informing your consumers about what is going on at your place of business.
This recent article “Fortune 500 Companies Using Social Media to reach Customers” and the recent DoD decision is supportive of the need for ALL organizations to consider developing and executing a social media strategy.
Developing a social media strategy really starts with understanding how the organization intends to leverage social media (awareness, gain customers, push out news and events, announce new products, etc) and what benefits will you gain by having a social media strategy. For the university I have looked at this from the standpoint of awareness of university educational programs, promote what makes us difference and the benefits of becoming a student at the university.

I utilize Social Media to gain interest in who I am and what I do. I also send my “blogs” to my Twitter accounts because I am trying to gain interest in what I have to say and to maybe help someone in their research. I do feel like I am slipping when it comes to blogging because I’d like to do it more and I am subconscious about people being offended or or not being interested in what I have to say.
I have been successful in helping some non-profits get their messages out on Twitter and their own websites. Like you suggested I designed a plan according to what the non-profit is trying to accomplished and the audience they are trying to reach.
I am finding that Social Media takes ALOT of time, management and maneuvering. I myself enjoy it. I have build myself an approach that I explain to any potential clients or clients that contact me and are in need of getting themselves, organization and or their business out there.

I agreee that being active in Social Media can take up a lot of your time. I believe that focusing on no more than three (3) relevant sites (linkedin, twitter and possible facebook) will be sufficient to interact with your customer base. Organization is the key and having one dedicated resource would help!
I think we are on the same page. I agree that trying to manage more than 3 social networks would be too time consuming, BUT you can sign up for PING and enter your updates one time to ALL of your social networking sites that they support.
